This was basically two books: part one was gay, postapocalyptic lord of the rings; and part two was a straightforward commies vs. fascists war epic.
There are lots of trans characters and themes (including some gritty transphobia 😬), and plenty of leftist political discussion and commentary.
The military parts were a bit too "oorah" for my taste, but overall I really enjoyed the book.
